The Georgia Mathematics standards are designed to achieve a balance among concepts, skills, and problem solving. The standards stress rigorous concept development and real-world applications while maintaining a strong emphasis on computational and procedural skills. At all grades, the standards encourage students to reason mathematically, to evaluate mathematical arguments both formally and informally, to use the language of mathematics to communicate ideas and information precisely, and to make connections among mathematical topics and to other disciplines. The standards provide clear expectations for instruction, assessment, and student work. They define the level of work that demonstrates achievement of the standards, enabling a teacher to know "how good is good enough." The standards isolate and identify the skills needed to use the knowledge and skills to problem solve, reason, communicate, and make connections with other information.
