The Georgia Standards of Excellence for Science are designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and skills to develop proficient scientific knowledge. Based on the research found in A Framework for K-12 Science Education, the standards provide students with the scientific practices, concepts, and content necessary to analyze phenomena and solve real-world problems.
At the heart of the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Science is inquiry-based learning. The standards provide the opportunity for students to interact with science and engineering practices in a hands-on, student-centered way.
The standards include three major components:
- Disciplinary Core Ideas represent the content for Earth Science, Physical Science, and Life Science standards. In a real-world setting, these ideas are what scientists and engineers know.
- Science and Engineering Practices represent how science is conducted in the real world. The practices are what scientists and engineers do.
- Crosscutting Concepts represent how all science disciplines are connected.
