Mrs. Halleck’s Welcome Letter
Welcome to Austin Middle. You are now an Austin Eagle. Sixth grade is going to be an exciting year for you filled with lots of learning, studying and fun. This is my 8th year at Austin and I am very excited to be given the opportunity to teach your child this year. Some of the topics we will be learning about include space, rocks and minerals, the rock cyle and the weather.
ABOUT ME: My name is Mrs. Halleck and I have been married almost 31 years to my husband Randy. He works for Delta Airlines. We have three adult daughters: Meredith, Melissa & Mandy. Meredith is a 2016 graduate of UGA with a degree in Dietetics and Nutrition. She is married and works for CFA corporate. She and her husband Brad just had my first grandchild, Tatum, born July 17th. Melissa graduated from UGA in 2019 and will begin teaching kindergarten at Hutchens Elementary this year. My youngest daughter, Mandy, is a junior at Georgia Highlands majoring in psychology. She works for Chick-fil-A in Hiram. All three of my girls graduated from Hiram High School and loved being in the marching band and participating in sports. We are HUGE Georgia Bulldog fans and we love to travel.
ABOUT THIS CLASS: Earth Science lessons are geared toward inquiry learning, where I guide students as they discover the answers.
There will be a quiz every week either on Tuesday or Thursday over that week’s vocabulary and the past week’s understanding/lessons which can be found in their notebook. Students are expected to keep up with all handouts and notes that we take in class.
REMIND: I will be using REMIND to keep you informed. Both student and parent should sign up with the correct class code. Please enter the students name and class period. 470-235-4539
Regular: @rgscienceh Advanced: @adscienceh
TUTORING: My science tutoring will be on Monday mornings at 7:45. Your child will come to the front of the school and I will call for them at 7:45. Your student may attend tutoring with another science teacher. There is always tutoring offered the morning of a quiz or a test.
Students are encouraged to bring BYOT devices to class each day in order to fully participate in each lesson. These are meant for educational purposes only and should not be used during lunch. If students do not have technology it will be provided for them.
LATE WORK: I will accept late work but with a penalty. I normally take off 5 points on the first day an assignment is turned in late and then 2 points for every additional day. This can change depending on the assignment.
RETAKES or corrections are only available on Summative assignments. Most of this will need to be completed at home.
6th grade students can join clubs including STEM club, Geography club, Art Club, Fitness Club, FCA, Academic Bowl, Reading Bowl and ladies may join Ms. AMS. Hopefully this can begin after Labor Day.
Lastly, the middle school years can be challenging. It is very important that you stay involved and make your child’s education a priority. Know who their friends are and what they are doing. My goal is to help your child to become a solid independent thinker who is better equipped to solve problems. I am very excited to begin this year and look forward to working with you and your student to make this year a success.
Sincerely,
Lauri Halleck
