    McClure Middle School

    Physical Education Course Syllabus

    2017 - 2018

Welcome to McClure Middle School, we are very excited about the upcoming year as there are many changes coming to our department.  We will continue implementing our standards based on House Bill #229 (Student Health and Physical Education Act) all students enrolled in a PE course in grades one to 12 will have an annual fitness assessment.  Thus each student will receive a separate individualized PE report card at the end of the school year.

We have six standards that we will use to guide our program this year.  While they are broad to some degree they will allow us some flexibility in what we will try to get accomplished.  More detailed information is available on the Georgia Department of Education at https://www.georgiastandards.org/standards/GPS%20Support%20Docs/Physical_Education_Standards_4-30-09.pdf.

Standard # 1:  Demonstrates competency in motor skills and patterns needed to perform a variety of activities.

Standard # 2:  Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Standard # 3:  Participates regularly in physical activity.

Standard # 4:  Achieves and maintains a health enhancing level of physical fitness.

Standard # 5:  Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others to physical activity.

Standard # 6:  Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.

    General Procedures

    1)      After activities and changing, students will remain in their designated area until the dismissal bell.

    2)      After changing into their gym clothes, students will be required to bring all of their belongings out into the gym.  They will place their belongings in a designated area for the boys and a separate area for the girls.  Students will not be allowed to enter into that area without permission from one of the PE instructors.

    3)      While gym lockers are available for student use, we believe that in order to ensure optimal security and supervision that each student should place their belongings in the bleachers or another designated area.  We have the luxury of security cameras in the gym that we do not have in the locker rooms.  As a result if there is an incident, we will be able to identify the alleged thief on camera.

    4)      No one will be allowed to enter the locker rooms once the final horn has been sounded and attendance has been checked.

    5)      Please try to minimize the amount of belongings that are brought into the gym.  Personal items should be left in your locker located on your designated halls.

    6)      The members of the Physical Education Department will not be responsible for any items left in the gym or locker room.

    7)      Unless otherwise instructed, there should be NO EATING, DRINKING, or CHEWING GUM in the locker rooms, gymnasium, or during class activities.

    8)      Students are not allowed to take out or set up any equipment unless directed to do so by the instructor.

    9)      Report all ACCIDENTS or INJURIES to the instructor immediately.

    10) No student will be excused from physical education for another class or activity unless cleared through the administration.  Students missing class will be given an unexcused absence.

    11) It is the student’s responsibility to approach the teacher for any make-up assignments.

    Personal Items

We believe that while each student may have a need to have their cell phone or other electronic device at school, we firmly believe that those items should not be brought into the gym during our class time.  Those devices are better left locked up in your child’s locker which is found on their designated hall.  Please do not bring cell phones, I-pods, MP3 players, or other devices that might be easily stolen.  Also, please do not bring large amounts of cash into the gym that might be easily taken.  Protect yourself and be smart about what you have with you!!

    Physical Education Excuses

A doctor’s note is required for extended exemption from participation in P.E.  The teacher will evaluate excuse notes from parents for minor health problems.  However, a doctor’s note will be expected when a student misses more than three consecutive days in a row.

    Curriculum

At the middle school level, the physical education curriculum needs to concentrate on reinforcing the skills learned at the elementary school level and begin to develop more advanced skills while participating in a variety of activities.

Students will be able to comprehend, evaluate, and demonstrate:

    -               Competency in a variety of form of movement

    -               Concepts and principals of health-related fitness

    -               Personal health-enhancing activities (fitness assessment)

    -               Benefits of regular participation in physical activity

    -               Responsible personal and social behavior

    -               Awareness of individual differences and similarities

    -               Physical activity provides for enjoyment, challenge, and self-expression

    Dress Code

Our dress code follows the Paulding County Board of Education policy which requires students to wear proper clothing while participating in PE.  Please assist your son or daughter in purchasing the correct clothing to be worn so that they will be successful while in the gym.

Shoes - While other classes have certain requirements, we require all students participating in PE to have a pair of athletic shoes.  That might include tennis shoes, cross-trainers, jogging shoes, and/or basketball shoes, all of which provide proper support for their ankles and prevent other injuries.  We have had major problems with shoes that do not fit the above description and cannot be tightened if the need arises.  Sketchers and other non-athletic shoes that do not have non-marking and/or non-skid soles are very dangerous and will NOT be allowed.  They also create a hygiene issue.

Shirts – A normal t-shirt needs to be worn during PE meaning one that is not a scoop neck or tank like.  Tank tops or even sleeveless shirts are not allowed as they are a hygiene issue as the students get older.  Please keep in mind that you cannot wear the clothes that you wear to school during PE.  We call those street clothes and they are not allowed as they might get damaged during certain team activities that we do.   This seems to be more of an issue for the females than the males.

Shorts - Please keep in mind that jean shorts or shorts with pocket openings are not allowed due to safety concerns.  No cheerleading shorts will be allowed.  All shorts must meet the requirements of the Paulding County dress code per the student handbook which states that shorts should not be shorter than 5 inches above the knee (which will be measured using an index card).  Students will not be allowed to participate if they are not dressed out in uniform.  Please discuss any financial hardships you might have in purchasing a P.E. uniform with our school counselor.  P.E. clothes should be taken home once a week to be washed and return to school the following day.

    Behavior Management Plan

We believe in assertive discipline and aim to provide an enjoyable, structured, safe place for our students to participate.  Inappropriate behavior will be dealt with quickly and harshly.  Students’ will first receive a warning for the first incident.  The second occurrence will result in either a detention or optional exercises.  Parents will be notified via a detention form.  Failure to serve an assigned detention will result in an office referral.  However, please note that if a student is severely disruptive, he or she will be sent directly to administration.

    Grading Requirements

Our PE Department has an unbelievable reputation in that we average only about 2 to 3 students a day who do not dress out.  That is pretty amazing since we see about 850 kids a day between all three grade levels.  Therefore, our weekly points will be earned through a combination of dressing-out, participation, skill testing, and behavior.    These points will be accumulated thru the week.  Thus, failure to dress out during the week can be detrimental since we only have 9 weeks in each grading period.  The other grades for the period will come from a fitness mid-term and final exam.    The following will demonstrate the importance of dressing out on a daily basis during each week:

Dresses out all 5 days                         100 points earned

Dresses out 4 out of 5 days                  75 points earned

Dresses out 3 out of 5 days                 50 points earned

Dresses out 2 out of 5 days                  25 points earned

Dresses out 1 day or less                        0 points earned

The following behavior consequences will also be imposed during the nine week period for failure to dress out and participate.  Remember this applies to each semester not just the 9 week period.

1st missed dress out or participation day        Warning

2nd missed dress out or participation day        Parent Notification

3rd missed dress out or participation day        Assigned Afternoon Detention

4th missed dress out or participation day        Office Referral
