Hello there Ragsdale Students, Parents, and Staff (as well as anyone else who may be reading this)! My name is Dr. Sean Torchia. I am originally from Rochester, NY, which is considered western NY. I grew up with a sister, Katie (34), who is two years younger. Through the years, though, my family has grown tremendously. My mother remarried and I gained two stepbrothers and a stepsister. I have two awesome nephews from my stepsister (9 and 6), and in NOV 2015, my sister had quadruplets (3 nephews and a niece)! The 6 of them are incredible. On the other side of the family, my father has a girlfriend, and I am blessed to still have my amazing 82 year-old grandma alive. She’s the best! As for me, I am getting married to the woman of my dreams (also a teacher – 1st grade at Abney) in less than 2 months (SEPT 16th, 2017), and I could not be more excited and happy!
I left Rochester for SUNY (State University of New York) Geneseo after graduating high school, and graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Education in May 2003, while majoring in Dual Certification (Elementary Education & Special Education). Upon graduating, I worked as a sub for a year until I received my big break to come teach students with Autism in 2004 here in Paulding County at Nebo Elementary. I taught students with Autism for one year, and then taught 3rd grade Inclusion at Nebo for 7 years. While teaching at Nebo, I completed my Masters in Elementary Reading and Literacy from Walden University in Dec. 2006 and my Doctorate (PhD) in Curriculum and Instruction from Capella University in April 2012.
After teaching at Nebo for 8 years, I was transferred to McGarity Elementary where I continued to teach 3rd grade. I taught third grade there for 3 years, and I have taught 5th grade at Ragsdale for the past two years. I am really looking forward to teaching 5th grade again this year!
When I am not teaching, I enjoy playing and watching all sports. My two favorites are football and golf, though. I am a HUGE fan of THE Buffalo Bills! September 10th, their first game, cannot get here quick enough! It’s going to be a special year for my boys! I can feel it! Can you? You heard it here first: “Your 2018 Super Bowl Champions are THE Buffalo Bills!” Doesn’t it sound amazing? I sure think so! As for golf, I would play it every day if I could (hopefully when I retire I will). There is nothing like the competition with your friends, challenging yourself to do better, and being out in the beautiful scenery that our wonderful God has provided for us. I know he is getting older, but I enjoy watching Phil Mickelson golf. He’s been my favorite for well over a decade. (That’s me with Phil at the 2009 Mickelson ExxonMobile Teacher’s Academy that I was blessed to be able to attend. I was speechless when I met him.) Some of the other sports that I enjoy playing are tennis and basketball, and I hope to get back into softball at some point. In addition, I have a love/hate relationship with running/working out/exercising (It’s getting harder to stay in shape as I grow older).
Some of my other “likes” include ALL foods, especially food from the grill. I love me some sausages with peppers and onions or a nice, juicy bacon cheeseburger! Ribs, steak, and Lindsay’s shrimp are amazing as well! As for sweets, I am a chocoholic. In fact, I HAVE to eat some chocolate before I go to bed every night.
On Sunday mornings, you may see me at church (either West Ridge or Vintage 242). God is awesome!
I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit about me, and if there is anything else you’d like to know, feel free to ask!
