PE Rules:
Be a PE S.T.A.R!
S- stay focused, stay safe, and show good sportsmanship
T- try your best
A- always follow the rules
R- respect others and equipment
CHAMPs is our school wide behavior expectation motto. It stands for:
C- conversation during specific activity or transition (ex. talking quietly or no talking)
H- how to get help during activity (ex. raising hand or asking teacher)
A- activity the student is participating in (specified each day on the board)
M- movement expected during activity (walking in the hall or working on specific skill)
P- participation expected during activity (skill we are focused on each day)
Positive Incentives:
- My main approach to positive incentives is to give compliments to students who are making good choices. I find that students love to be recognized in a positive manner and that other students tend to correct their behavior in order to also receive a compliment.
- Each day 1 student is chosen as the "student of the day" to earn a prize from the PE treasure box. This student is chosen based on the following criteria: being prepared for PE by wearing tennis shoes, participating in the day's activity including warm up exercises, and obeying the PE rules. This reward may be earned more than one time a year once all students in the class have been given the opportunity of earning this reward. A treasure box prize may also be earned by a student who does a special deed (such as taking time to help clean up equipment in the gym or helping a friend).
- Golden horseshoes are also awarded for good behavior (usually showing good hallway CHAMPs on the way walking in the hall back to their classroom).
Consequences:
The first time a rule is broken, the student will receive a warning and be reminded of the rules. The second time a rule is broken, the student will sit in time out (usually 2-3 minutes) to think about the rule they broke and how to correct the behavior. After three time outs, a parent note is sent home in the student's agenda to be signed by the parent and returned. If behavior issues continue, the student may be assigned a written assignment during PE. Any severe behavior (such as fighting or bullying) or consistent behavior issues will be referred to the administration.
Grading:
Grades are based on obeying the PE rules, wearing tennis shoes in order to participate safely in class, and behavior in class. Grades are given on report cards every 9 weeks then the student starts over with a "clean slate" for the next 9 week grading period. Students will NEVER be graded based on athletic ability or skill level, as all students develop at different rates and excel at various activities.
- 4 (Satisfactory for kindergarten) = 0-1 time outs and shoe infractions
- 3 (Satisfactory for kindergarten) = 2-5 time outs and shoe infractions
- 2 (Needs improvement for kindergarten) = 6-9 time outs and shoe infractions
- 1 (Unsatisfactory for kindergarten) = 10 or more time outs and shoe infractions
Assessments:
- Students will take a fitness pre (September) and post test (April) in order for me to track their fitness progress. 3rd-5th grades will set fitness goals for themselves as part of the fitness test. All students will have these 2 scores sheets sent home for parent review. Presidential and National awards are given out at field day for those students earning this award.
- Students will also have various skill assessments performed during the year in order to track skill development (throwing overhand, catching a ball, rolling a ball underhand, kicking a ball, and for kindergarten and 1st grades movement skills (galloping, skipping, hopping on 1 foot, jumping on 2 feet).
- Students will also take part in a state mandated fitness test called the FitnessGram (March). Kindergarten-5th grade will have height and weight taken (privately by me) and reported to the state. This will be done each year through the 12th grade to follow physical development of each child. In addition to height and weight, 4th & 5th grades will also be tested in a pacer test (cardiovascular endurance), back saver sit and reach (flexibility), sit up test and push up test (muscular strength and endurance). Score reports will be sent home with these fitness scores in May.
- 4th grade will also be required to take a pre and post written test (SLO- student learning objective) to assess academic skills learned in PE this year.
- In order to build students' endurance in distance running, all students will participate in Jogging Club once a month. Kindergarten- 2nd grade will jog laps around the gym for 5 minutes and 3rd-5th grade will jog laps around the gym for 10 minutes. Students will receive a popsicle stick for each lap jogged and scores are tallied each month. The top 3 girls and 3 boys from each grade are recorded on the board. At field day, the top boy and top girl in each grade receive a Jogging Club trophy!
