Accelerated Reader
Program Information
Dear Rocket Readers and Families:
We are excited to announce that the Accelerated Reader program is up and running! AR is a program that encourages all students to improve their reading while having fun and earning prizes. Our PTA supports the program by helping with the yearly subscription costs for AR and by providing the accompanying prizes. To participate, students select a library book from their current reading level (which is indicated by a colored dot sticker on the book), read the book at school or at home, and take a short, online quiz regarding details from the book. Each book is worth a set number of points based on the length of the book and its level of difficulty; students earn a percentage of those points for every correctly answered question. The program tracks the students’ progress and as points are earned, they advance through the ten planetary levels located on the wall outside the Media Center. Once a month the point’s reports are reviewed and any earned prizes are distributed to the participating students.
The students began taking AR quizzes last week; the program will run through Friday, May 2, 2014. Because AR is not a requirement by the school and is not used for a recorded grade, each teacher has the flexibility to approach the program differently. Please take the time to understand the classroom routine for selecting books and quizzing, and let your child’s teacher know of any questions.
Information about how you can monitor your child’s AR progress at home is on the back; if you have any other questions you may contact the AR Chairperson, Cheryl Marfilius, at 678-363-5176 or cheryl154@bellsouth.net or our Media Specialist, Dee Tackett at dtackett@paulding.k12.ga.us
Thank you, and Happy Reading!
