Character In Action
Each month the district recognizes students throughout the district who have exhibited positive character traits in and out of the classroom. Students are chosen by the faculty, students, and/or administration from their schools.
This month students were recognized from Hutchens Elementary, Nebo Elementary, Northside Elementary and South Paulding Middle School as award recipients for the character trait of Patriotism. These students are excellent examples of Patriotism, which was the Character Education trait for the month of September.
Olivia England. a Kindergartener from Hutchens Elementary School, was nominated by her guidance counselor, Mr. White. Olivia has fully embraced the Character Education word for September - Patriotism.
On September 11, 2001 our world was forever changed when the terrorist attacks occurred in New York City, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania. Olivia, being 5 years old, didn’t witness this as did her parents and most of us.
This year on 9/11, Olivia came dressed in the most beautiful red and white striped dress with blue and white stars. She is eager to stand each day for our Moment of Silence and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Olivia’s Kindergarten teacher says Olivia is a joy each and every day, but her love of country makes her the perfect candidate for the Character trait of Patriotism.
Landon Washington, a 4th Grader from Nebo Elementary, has demonstrated the characteristic of Patriotism since his first days of school through his commitment to ensure the flag is raised in the morning and lowered in the afternoons, reminders to classmates of the importance of standing and respecting the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem, and removing one’s hat out of respect.
Landon’s patriotism was quite evident during our recent study of the events of September 11, 2001 and the compassion and concern he shared regarding the first responders and the heroes of that day.
It is a great pleasure to honor Landon this month for his outstanding patriotism. Congratulations, Landon!
Rosa Nicholas, Carlos Figueroa Navarro, Macie Crabbe, and Sadie Salamon, are all 5th Graders at Northside Elementary, and all represent the school’s Flag Patrol. This team has done an exceptional job of taking care of the flags this school year.
They show their patriotism and pride each and every day when they carry themselves in a dignified manner, taking the flags to the pole and raising them.
They also are careful to fold the flags in the proper manner at the end of each day. Helping them with that cause was Sen. Airman Alex Terrell, U.S. Air Force, who visited the school recently and taught the Flag Patrol the proper technique. Alex is a former Northside Elementary student and graduated from East Paulding High School.
Jesse Tolar Shoemaker, and 8th Grader from South Paulding Middle School, is a perfect representative for Patriotism because he is no stranger to the commitment and sacrifices from devotion to the United States of America. JT Shoemaker has watched his own father, a Senior Chief in the US Navy, be deployed multiple times in the defense of his country.
JT observed firsthand how his father, as well as the rest of his family, love this country enough to sacrifice time, comfort, and safety.
JT has chosen to serve his family, friends, and community through Boy Scouts. He is currently a Star scout, only two ranks away from Eagle Scout. He has participated in numerous flag ceremonies in this role and helped lead the Pledge of Allegiance at SPMS last year for Honors Day. South Paulding Middle is proud to have JT Shoemaker represent our school and to be the face of Patriotism this school year.
