Character Education
Each month the school district recognizes students throughout the district who have exhibited positive character traits in and out of the classroom. Students are chosen by the faculty, students, and/or administration from their schools. This month, students from Burnt Hickory Elementary, Russom Elementary, Shelton Elementary, Moses Middle, McClure Middle and North Paulding High School were recognized as award recipients for the character trait of Generosity.
Jordan Anderson, 4th Grade, Burnt Hickory Elementary, was nominated by his teacher, Ms. Eliza Nobles. Jordan shows generosity in many ways. When he found out that a certain student regularly doesn't have a snack, he began bringing him one. When another student needs a pencil or paper, he is the first to offer these items to his classmates. The biggest example of generosity has been during our Pennies for Paulding campaign. On the first day he earnestly asked where the money goes when it is donated. His teacher explained the program and the purpose. He was amazed that some kids don't have a good Christmas. On Thursday he came in with $100. It was comprised of a few twenties, tens, fives and
even one-dollar bills. When his teacher asked him where he got the money, he said it was his birthday money. She immediately asked if his mom and dad knew that he brought it and he said they did. He was so happy to help other kids, he absolutely beamed all day. He said "This is really important."
Suzannah Russell, 3rd Grade, Russom Elementary, was nominated by three different teachers who had the following to say: Her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Chase-Wegner, describes Suzannah as “always kind, understanding, and unselfish”, and has witnessed many occasions where Suzannah has put others before herself.” Mrs. Whitson, Suzannah’s first grade teacher, will never forget the time Suzannah offered to give all her eggs from an Easter egg hunt to a child that had missed the event because they were sick. Her current teacher, Mrs. Nix, says, “Suzannah is a student who never expects anything from anyone. She is always the first one willing to do something for someone without ever expecting anything
in return.”
Isabella (Izzy) Bramlett, 5th Grade, Shelton Elementary, is a very generous student. She donated close to $100.00, from her own piggy bank, toward Pennies for Paulding. One of Izzy’s classmates shared with the class that he was displaced by Hurricane Michael. Izzy had her mother emailed her teacher to make sure this classmate had everything he needed. Izzy shared that she just wanted her displaced classmate to “be like everyone else.” We are very proud to have Izzy represent Shelton Elementary, because she is a great example of generosity for other students.
Jenny Bui, 8th Grade, McClure Middle School, gives of herself and her time tirelessly and selflessly. Whenever any of her teachers or administrators need someone to head up a project, she is there with a bright smile and an eagerness to help. Jenny’s generosity goes beyond the material and into her giving of herself, her time and spreading her positive attitude throughout SMMS. We are very fortunate to have her in our
classrooms.
Divya Vegesina, 8th Grade, Moses Middle School. Her teacher says this about her: Divya is one of the kindest and most generous students I have ever had. She is always the first to volunteer to help both teachers and students. She will use her own money to donate to causes such as
Pennies for Paulding. Divya is an active member of Beta club and uses her resources and time to help others.
Kollin Etheridge, 11th grade, North Paulding High School, is always willing to help others. Whether it's doing extra work for a group project to make sure everyone does well or saying something kind when others are being negative or explaining a concept to a student who didn't understand or even getting students a textbook so they don't have to get up; he's truly a generous young man and deserves to be recognized for it. I am grateful for the opportunity to teach him!

Alcohol & Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) Recognition
The Board of Education heard a presentation by Assistant Superintendent of Operations Dr. Susan Browning on the highly successful Alcohol & Drug Awareness Program that has taken place at one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school since 2013. The program is sponsored by the Paulding County Superior Court as well as the following partners: Paulding County Government; Paulding County Commissioners; Paulding County Sheriff’s Office; Paulding County Fire and Rescue; and Paulding County Emergency Management and other First Responders.
The program is the brainchild of Paulding Judicial Circuit Administrator Frank Baker, who initially implemented the program in the Cobb County School District before bringing it to PCSD in 2013. Baker described for the Board how the program has reached students at all levels with specifically tailored, positive messages and entertainment that encourages students to make healthy lifestyle choices. This year's first program took place recently at Abney Elementary School, and the next two programs will take place at East Paulding Middle School and East Paulding High School in the coming months.
Dr. Browning's presentation can be downloaded here: ADAP Presentation 12/10/18
