Bookworms K-5 Reading and Writing Curriculum

Elementary English Language Arts (ELA)
The elementary English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum in Paulding County is implemented through Bookworms Reading and Writing, a comprehensive program designed to ensure that every student experiences literacy growth by design, not by chance. Using a common, high-quality Tier 1 curriculum across all 19 elementary schools allows us to provide equitable access to resources and instruction for all students.
Grounded in research and best practices, Bookworms emphasizes:
-
Grade-level reading with rich, authentic texts
-
Differentiated skills instruction to meet students’ individual needs
-
Genre-based writing instruction that builds strong, confident writers
A distinguishing feature of the Bookworms curriculum is the high volume of student reading. Rather than relying on brief excerpts or isolated passages, students read from 265 complete books throughout grades K–5, cultivating engagement, fluency, and a love of reading.
Each day, students participate in three 45-minute instructional blocks that together form a comprehensive literacy framework:
-
English Language Arts (ELA) Block – Whole-class instruction focused on comprehension, vocabulary, and writing.
-
Shared Reading Block – Interactive reading experiences designed to model fluent reading and promote discussion.
-
Differentiated Skills Block – Targeted small-group instruction to strengthen foundational skills based on student needs.
Through consistent use of Bookworms, Paulding County elementary students are empowered to develop as thoughtful readers, writers, and communicators prepared for success in every grade that follows.
