Overview

The Paulding County School District’s English Language Arts (ELA) program—supported by the Teaching and Learning Department—is designed to develop skilled, confident readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers. Our goal is to ensure that all students can access and analyze complex texts, communicate effectively, and engage thoughtfully with the world around them.

ELA instruction in Paulding County is grounded in evidence-based practices, the newly adopted Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE), and a shared belief that literacy is foundational to all learning and success beyond the classroom.

Curriculum Design

The English Language Arts curriculum in Paulding County is designed to introduce students to core concepts that are further developed and expanded as they progress through each grade level. Instruction is intentionally structured to build both foundational and higher-order literacy skills, ensuring that every student can read, write, speak, and listen with purpose and precision.

Our curriculum emphasizes:

  • Exposure to a variety of literary and informational texts at increasing levels of complexity.

  • Integration of reading, writing, listening, and speaking as interconnected skills.

  • Alignment with the Georgia Standards of Excellence, which outline clear expectations for instruction, assessment, and student work.

  • Development of critical thinking, analysis, and communication through engaging and relevant learning experiences.

Core Beliefs for High-Quality ELA Instruction

The Paulding County School District’s approach to literacy instruction is guided by the following core beliefs and practices:

  • Reading comprehension is the product of word recognition and oral language comprehension, rather than an isolated skill.

  • Screening and diagnostic assessments should be used to differentiate reading instruction based on students’ strengths and needs across key skill areas—Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, and Comprehension—rather than relying solely on overall reading levels.

  • All students benefit from systematic foundational reading skills instruction, including Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Print Concepts, and Fluency.

  • Students should read intact fiction and nonfiction texts within their grade-level complexity band every day, with scaffolding provided as needed to support access and understanding.

  • Effective teaching includes modeling, thinking aloud, and working with individuals and small groups to guide learning.

  • Readers actively think about ideas in text, applying metacognitive strategies to monitor and deepen comprehension.

  • A strong classroom literacy program builds background knowledge to enhance comprehension and vocabulary growth.

  • Students learn more when they are actively engaged in rich discussions about the texts they read.

  • Reading and writing are reciprocal processes, and students should engage in both daily to strengthen their literacy development.

  • Conferring with students about their writing process and quality helps them grow as independent, reflective writers.

Instructional Approach

ELA classrooms in Paulding County are designed to promote engagement, rigor, and equity. Teachers integrate:

  • Explicit instruction in foundational and comprehension skills.

  • Close reading of grade-level texts to promote critical thinking.

  • Structured writing opportunities that mirror real-world communication and analytical tasks.

  • Collaborative discussions that promote deeper understanding and oral language development.

  • Use of data to inform instructional decisions and tailor support for individual learners.

Assessment and Continuous Improvement

Students’ literacy growth is monitored through a balanced assessment system that includes universal screeners, diagnostic tools, progress monitoring, and classroom-based formative assessments. Data from these tools inform instruction, guide interventions, and ensure that each student receives the targeted support needed to progress toward grade-level expectations and beyond.

Professional Learning and Support

The Teaching and Learning Department provides ongoing professional development for teachers focused on best practices in reading and writing instruction, assessment literacy, and differentiation. Through collaboration and coaching, teachers are supported in delivering instruction that is aligned, engaging, and responsive to student needs.
