bulletKnowing the frequent budget shortfalls in public and private education, the Georgia Mineral Society, Inc. wishes to aggressively promote Earth science education.  The Holly Camp Memorial Earth Science Education Minigrant Program intends to supplement the classroom teacher's operating budget.  These moneys do not replace funds normally budgeted for education.  The funds provide opportunities to enhance and enrich Earth science learning.
 
Examples of projects likely to be funded include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
     Purchase of Mineral/Rock samples or collections
     Purchase of software for Earth science subjects
     Materials and expenses for classroom experiments
     Computer or GPS hardware purchases
     Limited on-line service fees to provide geological research access to Internet  resources
 
This program is open to all middle school earth science classes and teachers within Georgia. 
 
Teachers need apply for the Earth Science Minigrant Program by filling out the updated forms on the GMS website.

"Community-based Environmental Education Initiative"
National Wildlife Refuge System’s The Nature of Learning community-based
environmental education initiative seeks to: use National Wildlife Refuges
as outdoor classrooms to promote a greater understanding of local
conservation issues; encourage an interdisciplinary approach to learning
that seeks to enhance student academic achievement; utilize field
experiences and student-led stewardship projects to connect classroom
lessons to real world issues; and involve a partnership among local
schools, community groups, natural resource professionals and local
businesses. Maximum Award: $5,000. Eligibility: schools or non-profit
organizations, including "Friends" groups, Cooperative and Interpretive
Associations, and Audubon Chapters. Deadline: June 1, 2006.
